Dr Knut Schroeder

Having trained in Germany and the Bath GP Vocational Traning Scheme, Dr Knut Schroeder MD PhD MRCP FRCGP qualified as a General Practitioner in 1998. After a career in academic general practice at the University of Bristol, he became a part-time partner at the Concord Medical Centre in Bristol in 2005, doing clinical work three days a week. He continues to hold an honorary position as Senior Clinical Lecturer and has a particular interest in medical education, clinical diagnosis, supported self-care and sustainability of health care. Keen to help lay people become better and more confident in making sense of medical symptoms, Dr Schroeder recently published the useful guide: Diagnosing Your Health Symptoms For Dummies and is GP Media Adviser for NHS Choices (www.nhs.uk). A main focus of his treatment philosophy is to enable people to make better choices about their health.

    When you develop symptoms such as a head ache should you not do anything? Take some pain killers? See your pharmacist? Consult your GP? See a specialist or other health professional privately? Go to the nearest Accident and Emergency department – or, in the worst case, should you phone 999 for an ambulance? To stay healthy and get the best available medical advice and treatment when you fall ill, you need to be able to make rational decisions about your health. Doing so can at times be tricky and even a bit scary. In many cases you’ll be able to make the right decision just by using common sense, but it’s easy to feel out of your depth.
