Finding the best Rehab

Rehab expert Jef Mullins is an internationally acknowledged mental health recovery specialist. He has worked extensively in mental health rehabilitation, as well as managed and Directed some of the biggest and most prestigious rehab centres. Due to the very nature of mental health crises such as addiction, stress and trauma - selecting the best rehab for yourself or family member can be a particularly daunting prospect. However, it may well also be the single, most important decision ever made and so has to be given full consideration.

It’s a decision akin to choosing the right person to look after your young child, in that you are entrusting something very delicate and vital to the care of others: your life, your future and the quality of both those things

Therefore, Total Health asked Jef to provide some expert guidelines to help anyone who may be faced with this dilemna. In his article, How to Find the Best Rehab he provides a framework to help guide your own questions and research.

Refering to the quality of the clinical staff, Jef says, "Buildings are important but the true quality of treatment is driven by the quality, openness and enthusiasm of the staff". He therefore suggests that it is worth taking, "time to talk to more than just the person who is showing you around and, where possible, speak to the manager. The manager’s approach and personality will be mimicked by the whole centre. This is a dynamic of all clinics I have worked in and visited. Make sure to ask about the qualifications of staff."

A good Mix of Medical and Therapy Experts

It is important that the clinic offers a wide range of qualifications amongst its staff. It should certainly have trained therapists, a doctor, a nurse and psychiatrists. Jef cautions, "Be wary of any clinic that relies too heavily on volunteers, over trained workers and also of any centre that says all the staff are ‘Recovery Coaches’, trainees or receive only in-house training."

NB There are also highly confidential and discrete residential detox units for time-sensitive clients who do not necessarily want prolonged stays in a rehab.
