chloasma

A condition in which pale brown patches appear on the forehead, cheeks, and nose.

chocolate cyst

A type of ovarian cyst associated with endometriosis. Because it responds to hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle it fills with blood during menstruation and this turns a dark brown colour, hence the description.

cholangitis

Inflammation of the bile duct.

cholecystectomy

The surgical removal of the gallbladder.

cholecystitis

Acute or chronic inflammation of the gallbladder causing severe abdominal pain.

cholestasis

Stagnation of bile in the small bile ducts in the liver, leading to jaundice and liver disease.

cholesteatoma

A rare but serious condition in which skin cells proliferate and grow inwards from the ear canal.

cholesterol

A substance present in many tissues and an important constituent of cell membranes although high concentrations of a certain type of cholesterol in the blood are unhealthy.

chondrodermatitis nodularis chronica helicis

Benign, small, painful nodules that occur on the ear caused by inflammation of skin and cartilage.

chondromalacia patellae

Softening and damage to the cartilage at the back of the knee-cap.

choriocarcinoma

A malignant cancer occurring during pregnancy, usually developing from tissue that would normally form the placenta. It may grow out of a hydatidiform mole.

choroid

A layer of tissue situated at the back of the eye behind the retina.

choroidal melanoma

Cancer of the eye.

choroidoretinitis

Inflammation of the choroid and retina.

A form of haemophilia.

Structures in the cell nucleus that carry genetic information.

chronic

A disease of long duration generally involving slow changes.

chronic daily headache

Very frequent headaches, often without any apparent underlying cause, possibly due to a heightened response to pain signals.

chronic fatigue syndrome

A condition causing extreme fatigue over a prolonged period, sometimes years.

chronic lymphocytic leukaemia

A type of leukaemia resulting in high levels of mature but abnormal cells called lymphocytes in the bloodstream.

chronic myeloid leukaemia

A type of leukaemia that affects all the blood cells except the lymphocytes and progresses relatively slowly if left untreated.

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Emphysema and bronchitis; often associated with smoking and air pollution. Abbreviated to COPD.

ciliary body

A structure in the eye containing muscles that alter the shape of the lens to adjust focus.

CIN

An abbreviation for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, abnormal changes in the cervix of the uterus that may resolve spontaneously, or may progress to cervical cancer.
