A term that means redness of the skin.

erythema ab igne

A skin reaction caused by chronic exposure to heat. Before the advent of central heating it was commonly seen in the elderly who stood or sat too near to open fires or electric heaters. It is now more commonly caused by laptop computers.

erythema chronicum migrans

The characteristic rash of Lyme disease, a disease caused by a bacterium that is transmitted by the bite of a tick that usually live on deer.

erythema induratum

A rare, chronic condition that classically produces painful, firm, and sometimes ulcerated nodules of the lower legs (usually of women) in association with tuberculosis.

erythema multiforme

A skin rash due to an abnormal immune response to a drug, infection or disease.

erythema nodosum

A condition characterised by the eruption of red-purple tender swellings on the legs. The most common cause is a streptoccal infection of the throat.

erythematous

A condition identified by redness of the skin. It is typically the result of infection or inflammation on or below the skin resulting in dilated and congested capillaries.

erythrocyte

A red blood cell, a type of cell in the bloodstream specialised for transporting oxygen.

erythroderma

Intense and widespread reddening of the skin due to inflammatory skin disease.

erythromelalgia

A rare condition that can cause redness and pain in all parts of the body, but most frequently the hands and feet.

ESR

An abbreviation for erythrocyte sedimentation rate, the speed with which red blood cells settle out of suspension in the blood. This indirectly measures inflammation in the body.

ET

Abbreviation for Eustachian tube.

Eustachian tube

The passage that runs from the middle ear to the back of the nose. It acts as a drainage channel from the middle ear and maintains hearing by periodically opening to regulate air pressure.

event monitor

A type of ECG recorder that is worn at home for a prolonged period, usually a month, and is set to record only when an event such as an arrhythmia occurs

exanthem

A widespread rash, usually occurring in children. They can be caused by toxins or drugs, or microorganisms or they can result from an autoimmune disease.

excision

The removal of a piece of tissue or an organ from the body.

exfoliative dermatitis

An uncommon but serious condition resulting in widespread scaling of the skin.

exophthalmos

A condition that causes the eye to bulge out of the socket.
