On 31st January 2009, Mr Khai Lam of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals and London Bridge Hospital was the first UK recipient of the Gold 'La Medaille d'Honneur' from L'Etiole Europeenne du Devouement Civil et Militaire. The award, which was presented by Mdm Anh-Dao Traxel, President of EEDCM and daughter to President Jacques Chirac, was given in recognition of Mr Lam's work in helping children with serious spinal conditions, treating aircraft ejectee pilots with spinal injuries, and his work in developing novel spinal implants and technologies.
Mr Lam accepted the prestigious award on behalf of the staff: “I am deeply honoured and extremely grateful that my work has been recognised in this way by the EEDCM. I have accepted this award on behalf of the Guy's and St Thomas' Trust, my colleagues and patients that I have treated. This award will inspire us to continue with all our good work at the hospital''.
About Mr Khai Lam
Mr Khai Lam, B Med Sci, BM BS FRCS(Edin) FRCS(Orth) Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. First qualified in 1990 in Nottingham. He works at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Spinal Unit and at The London Bridge Hospital. He has specialist interests in all aspects of spinal surgery and disorders, e.g. lumbar and cervical disc degeneration, sciatica, adult and childhood deformities / scoliosis, tumours, infections, fractures, inflammatory disorders injection therapies (facet injections, nerve root blocks, discography).
Mr. Lam is active in both clinical and laboratory research into low back pain secondary to lumbar disc degeneration. He is a leader in the field of spinal disc replacement surgery, minimal invasive/access spine surgery and belongs to the AO Expert Group for atraumatic spinal access surgery that helps innovate new spinal implants and instrumentation. His centre is a global training centre for all these technologies and he regularly teaches and runs courses on these techniques both nationally and internationally.
Mr Lam also is in constant demand on the international training circuit; he has published widely and is highly regarded as one of the UK’s pioneers in innovative spinal surgery procedures. He also sits on the Editorial Board of European Spine Journal and writes regularly for totalhealth. He is U.K's first recipient of the distinguished gold ‘La Medialle d’Honneur’ from the L‘Etoile Europeenne De Devoument Civil et Militaire.
