Impacted wisdom teeth may need to be removed for a number of reasons. For example, repeated attacks of infectionInvasion by organisms that may be harmful, for example bacteria or parasites. in the gum can lead to pain and swelling, food packing can cause decay in either the wisdom tooth or the tooth in front, and cysts can form around the wisdom tooth.  This section is therefore headed by a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at the Royal Marsden Hospital who explains what can be done to restore patients to good oral health.

The wisdom tooth (or third molar) is the last tooth to erupt into the mouth and does so sometime after 16 years of age. Frequently there is not enough room to accommodate wisdom teeth and therefore they do not come through into the mouth normally. When this happens the wisdom teeth are said to be “impacted”. Wisdom teeth are usually either impacted forwards into the tooth in front or backwards into the jaw bone.

Gum disease carries a higher risk of causing a stroke than diabetes

High bloodA fluid that transports oxygen and other substances through the body, made up of blood cells suspended in a liquid. pressure and diabetes are both widely recognised as major risks that can contribute to non-fatal strokes (ischemic strokes). However, in recent years the evidence of a link between gum disease (periodontitis) and strokes has been growing. This latest research indicates that people are twice as likely to suffer a non-fatal stroke as a result of gum disease when compared to diabetes.
