Mr Sankey graduated in 1997 following studies at St John’s College, Cambridge and St Mary’s Hospital, London. He undertook specialist registrar training on the University College Hospital London rotation and spent a further year sub-specialising in upper limb surgery and arthroplasty at St Mary’s and University College hospitals, London. He is a Member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society, the British Orthopaedic Association and the Royal College of Surgeons (England); and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Orthopaedic).

    The shoulder joint is commonly affected by osteoarthritisA disease mainly of the large joints of the body, as a result of wear and tear of the surface cartilage. (wear and tear degeneration). It presents with pain and stiffness in the 6th to 8th decades of life, but may occur earlier in life in high impact sportsmen who have sustained traumatic injuries to their shoulder. Diagnosis is easily made based upon history, clinical examination and simple x-ray. Treatment starts with symptomatic control of pain, but often involves surgical replacement to part of or the whole of the joint with a shoulder prosthesisAn artificial device attached to the body.. The aim of surgery is pain control and improvement of function, and recovery takes 3–6 months.
