London’s top doctors say that Labour’s policy on Alcohol is a complete failure

The government must start listening to doctors and scientists – and act on the evidence. Extended pub opening hours and lack of correct policy to curb the abuse of alcohol is causing distress amongst both doctors and their patients. It is almost as if the current policy towards alcohol is there to encourage young people (especially) to drink too much of the hard stuff. C2H5OH (alcohol) is a toxic drug and too much of it can be lethal, yet the right message does not seem to come across.

Responding to the publication of the Health Select Committee’s Report on Alcohol (HC 151-I), Professor Ian Gilmore, President of the Royal College of Physicians said today:

“Politicians, first in Scotland but now more widely in the UK, are coming to the inevitable conclusion that existing policies to reduce health harms caused by alcohol misuse have failed. It is no longer possible to ignore the evidence which suggests that improved regulations would save lives. This authoritative report from the Health Committee gives welcome impetus to the consensus, much wider and deeper than the Westminster Government has acknowledged, that the time has come for stronger regulation, particularly on price and availability.”

As well as being President of the Royal College of Physicians, Professor Ian Gilmore is also Chair of the Alcohol Health Alliance UK.
