Changes to osteoporosis management following the Quality and Outcomes Framework 2012

The new Quality and Outcomes Framework from the British Medical Association was released on Monday and has made a number of recommendations for the management of osteoporosis and fractures as well as a number of other conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure.

From this month GPs will be offered financial incentives for assessing osteoporotic patients, correctly diagnosing osteoporosis and offering appropriate treatments in an attempt to reduce the number of fractures experienced by people with fragile bones. Approximately 300,000 fractures happen every year in the UK due to osteoporosis, and of these, 1150 people die from hip fractures every month.

The National Osteoporosis Society has welcomed the move and a number of resources have been made available to help GPs correctly identify and reduce fractures in patients suffering from osteoporosis. Dr Graham Davenport, a GP and Osteoporosis Champion for the Royal College of General Practitioners, has written that with the new website, Osteoporosis Resources, “…there really is no excuse for undiagnosed and untreated osteoporosis… we must act now to prevent some of the 300,000 unnecessary fragility fractures that occur each year in the UK.”
